CHRISTMAS GINGERBREAD COOKIES

2018-01-27T16:18:04+00:00 Tags: , , , |

I hope the festive season is treating you all well! I always get a craving for gingerbread cookies this time of year so I thought I would make some and also give them to my friends as a treat. I’ve never made them before so I went out and bought some cookie cutters and googled for recipes. I ended up coming across a Martha Stewart recipe which sounded perfect. It uses Molasses and dark brown sugar and most importantly!!… lots of ginger!

I also used her icing recipe but substituted Meringue powder instead of raw egg whites. This was my first attempt at decorative cookie icing. It’s much harder than I thought it would be but I ended up with some presentable ones and they seemed to be a hit with my friends which is the most important thing. Happy holidays!!!

Eat, drink and be merry!

FIRST BIRTHDAY CHALKBOARD

2018-01-27T16:19:36+00:00 Tags: , , , , , |

I’ve had a few people ask me since my last post about how I created Ava’s first birthday chalkboard sign, so I thought I’d let you in on the details. Firstly it’s not a real chalkboard but actually metallic markers on black foam board. I came across the idea online and thought it was really smart and far less messy to have at a party. Plus I’ve now got it hanging in Ava’s room and she can touch it as much as she likes!

I started out by writing down a list of things I wanted to include such as her favourite foods, first words and nicknames etc.. then I marked it out lightly in pencil to get the placement and free-handed it directly onto the board. Even though I love writing decorative lettering don’t be discouraged if that’s not your thing! I think any type of neat handwriting would be great as the effect of the metallic markers is pretty awesome. I was happy with how Ava’s turned out and it made a nice feature at her party.

FIRST BIRTHDAY SMASH CAKE FOR MISS AVA

2018-01-27T15:27:26+00:00 Tags: , , , , |

One year old and with a birthday cake made just for her! We decided to stage a smash cake a few days after Ava’s birthday. Kal and I set up a little smash cake stage using some of the decorations from her party in a position that would make the most of some lovely day light. I made her a low sugar coloured layered butter cake with low sugar cream cheese icing and mostly natural food colours. Then we dressed her in a pretty white lace dress and let her have fun!

The result was some lovely photos for her to look back on one day and treasure.

AVA’S FIRST BIRTHDAY

First birthday party

“Before you were born I thought it would be my role to guide you and show you this world. I never thought that it would be you that would teach me about myself and truly make me a better person. This past year has been extraordinary and I feel so privileged and grateful to be watching you grow into the little girl you are and the lady you will become. Happy 1st Birthday my darling Little Miss Ava.” xo

We celebrated Ava’s first birthday in September (I still can’t quite believe she’s one) with a lovely party with family and friends. As you can probably imagine for me the thought of planning my first children’s birthday party was like ticking off a wish on my bucket list and I was super enthusiastic about it. Really the first birthday is probably the only year that parents are able to choose the theme with no arguments so I kind of planned the party that I would have wanted as a little girl. I chose a garden high tea party theme and had an absolute blast making the decorations and baking, baking, baking! I also decided (as scary as it was) to tackle my first complete birthday cake! The sun was shining which made for a glorious day…

I couldn’t let her birthday pass without making a milestone chalkboard with some hand lettering.

Ava’s finished birthday cake and cupcakes… the base was a tasty chocolate mud cake with a delicious layer of chocolate ganache. I’ve sculpted before but never with fondant but I couldn’t resist attempting to bring to life this picture of a bunny for the topper which Kal and I drew before Ava was born. Her nickname was Ava bunny because she would thump and kick so much inside. The cupcakes are low sugar carrot cakes with low sugar cream cheese icing, for all her little friends that came to celebrate with her.

A FIRST ATTEMPT AT CAKE DESIGN

2018-01-27T15:40:06+00:00 Tags: , , , , , , |

My lovely sister-in-law turned the big 21 this year and when she told me about her party, in a spontaneous crazy moment I said “Can I decorate your cake!?”. I’d never done any cake decorating before but I was really thrilled to have an excuse to give it a try. Most of all I was interested in trying stencils as I’d seen them used before. If there is something I love more than paper prints, it’s edible prints!

The plan was to stencil on some personalised name lettering and a few flourishes. Straight away this all proved more difficult than I thought as I couldn’t find a huge amount of info on creating your own stencils for cake decorating and what supplies you could use to do so. Plus the cake supply stores could only give me info on how to use generic stencils that they sold. Anyway… I googled, brainstormed and did a lot of trial and error with different products such as coloured royal icing, Luster dust and glitter.

Meanwhile I also needed some other decorations…. this was my first attempt at sugar flowers. Time consuming but fun! (and tasty)

We decided this was the design we wanted to stencil on top of the cake. I found the best product to use was Luster dust if it was used very carefully and sparingly.

and after an evening of decorating and a sprinkle of glitter… the finished cake!! I was really happy and pleased that I ended up looking close to what I had planned in my mind and happier still that my sister-in-law loved it!

FAVOURITE TEA LETTERING

2018-01-27T15:43:43+00:00 Tags: , , , , |

Here’s some fun lettering I created last summer for my favourite teas. I found these great canisters at a dollar store with a blackboard label already on the front and simply used acrylic paint to hand paint the permanent lettering. They are the highlight of my kitchen counter, my favourites have expanded now so I really need to paint some more!

AVA LETTERING

2018-01-27T16:26:08+00:00 Tags: , , , , , |

Happy weekend! Thanks for following! I’m really enjoying this back cataloging of past projects. I’ll have some new posts to show soon, however for now the next project I wanted to share is one I created for Ava’s room a few months ago. It’s no secret I’m a hand lettering nut so I’ve been wanting to use Ava’s name in an illustrative type artwork for a while now.

Name lettering artwork in progress

I started by sketching up a few ideas and Kal really enjoys character design so I enlisted his help with some cute woodland animals.

Next I decided it would look best in watercolour..

Finished and framed. I really enjoyed working on this artwork and collaborating with Kal has created such a special keepsake for Ava.

UP UP AND AWAY BALLOON MOBILE

2018-01-27T16:22:04+00:00 Tags: , , , , , , |

As excited as I was when I was pregnant about planning and decorating the nursery I found it really hard to settle on a theme! or even how I wanted it to look. I had too many ideas running around in my head plus I’m not sure if I really believe in having a dominant theme like owls, princesses etc… I really wanted to leave it fairly open so it could evolve as the Little Miss grew and her personality shined through. So to start with I decided to create a colourful, cheerful and cosy environment. When I came across this balloon mobile I thought it was perfect and dreamy and something she would love to look at.

I couldn’t decide between pastel or bright colours so I ended up deciding on a bit of both.

and then my final version was just the two colours..

There are a few different versions out there but this one is made by stitching felt with some padding inside. Here is the link to the version I used for my inspiration.
